Class Descriptions

Ballet
Levels I - VIII

Ballet is a highly technical form of dance training that has its own vocabulary based on French terminology. It requires hard work, dedication and discipline. Students are taught various styles of Ballet techniques. Ballet classes meet 1-4 times per week.

POINTE

For dancers with extensive Ballet training. Pointe is the part of Classical Ballet in which a Ballet dancer supports all body weight on the tips of fully extended feet. Students will learn and practice pointe barre work with an emphasis on correct foot and body alignment. Pointe class is only open to students who are recommended by the Ballet faculty. To participate, all dancers must be enrolled in Level V or above, 2-3 times per week.

ELEMENTARY JAZZ & HIP-HOP

An introduction to Jazz and Hip-Hop for 1st and 2nd graders. Jazz classes emphasize body line, precision, flexible torso work, isolations of the body, and turns. Hip-Hop is a more high-energy style of dance that's performed to street or funk music. Classes include a proper warm-up, stretches, isolations, across-the-floor progressions, and various Jazz and Hip-Hop dance combinations.

JAZZ
Levels I - VI

Jazz classes stress a variety of movement styles from high energy, funky styles to lyrical and expressive styles. It emphasize body line, precision, flexible torso work, isolations of the body, and turns. Classes include a proper warm-up, stretches, isolations, across-the-floor progressions, and various Jazz dance combinations.

TAP
Levels I-VI

Tap is an American theatrical dance style made popular on Broadway. Students perform percussive footwork that marks out precise rhythmic patterns, while wearing dance shoes with metal taps on the bottom. North Shore's tap program begins with basic techniques and rhythmic development. Dancers will learn the principles of rhythm, balance and timing through routines and across-the-floor work. As the student progresses, more intricate dance patterns and combinations are introduced.

Hip-Hop
Levels I-V

Hip-Hop is an upbeat urban style of dance that is forever evolving. This high energy class focuses on musicality and rhythm. Open to students in 3rd grade and up, dancers will explore a variety of Hip-Hop techniques.

CONTEMPORARY

Contemporary dance is an interpretive, expressive style of dance with roots based in Ballet and Jazz. This class focuses on centering, strengthening the body, increasing flexibility, improving balance, proper placement, body alignment, fluidity and emotion.

TOT TIME
Ages 1-3 Years

Tot Time is a music and movement class where the student attends with a grown-up. Classes include singing, dancing, finger plays, fun props and musical instruments. Each class includes parachute, treasure box time, and story time.

DANCE WITH ME
Ages 2½-3½ Years

Dance With Me features Creative Movement and basic Ballet moves taught with a grown-up present. Students enjoy princess dances, freeze dances, and beginning Ballet moves, all while listening to music, using fun props, and learning about rhythm and coordination.
